Space Truckers is a fan made Star Trek Audio Drama. It is about 3 characters living in the Star Trek universe but they are not part of Starfleet. The series is about how they cope in the Star Trek universe in the 24th century while not having all the specialised training and equipment that a Starfleet officer would have.

Space Truckers came from a concept Gaius had many years ago (over 16 years ago now). The week before his wedding, He was still living at home with his parents and he wasn't sleeping well. One night, a week before the wedding, he woke up and a story popped into his head fully formed. That night he wrote a several thousand word story from start to finish which turned out to be the first episode of Space Truckers.

The 3 main characters meet through happenstance and are employed by a Ferenghi who runs an organisation that as well as running cargo from one place to another, offers another service. Space Truckers is set during the Dominion War and because StarFleet and the Federation are so stretched, there are situations that the Federation does not have the resources to deal with or are politically too sensitive to get involved with. So the trio are employed to help in these situations....for a price of course. Think a bit like Mission Impossible (the original series) and a bit of the A-Team, set in the Star Trek Universe and none of the main characters are in Starfleet, so they don't have access to all the fancy tech.
Gaius Ross created the original idea.

Ben Ward was instrumental in helping to create the episode outlines.

The writing team is Gaius Ross, Ben Ward, Peter Talman and Lois Ward (The sequence of names is the order that the writers came onboard to the Space Truckers writing team.).
An audio drama is like a radio play but is played from the internet instead of on the radio. Think of your favourite TV episode or film, but instead of visuals, you only have the voices and sound effects creating the episode. Your mind will create the images for you. Well known examples include the Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds radio drama and the long running radio Soap Opera The Archers, produced by the BBC.
Short answer - Yes.

Long answer - Star Trek has spoken about many subjects; drugs, racism, xenophobia and not judging someone by the way they look, are just some of the subjects Star Trek has tackled over its 60 year history. But the subject of special needs has rarely been spoken about. Yes, there is Data who could be seen as being on the autistic spectrum but he is an Android, that was how he was designed by his creator and then there are the Pakleds - more on them later.

Special Needs has never been overtly discussed in star trek. It can seem as if there is no one with any form of Special Needs in the Federation because of the advancement of medical technology, but that isn’t the case, as evidenced by Doctor Bashir having been genetically enhanced as documented in the Deep Space Nine episodes, “Doctor Bashir, I Presume” and “Statistical Probabilities”. Special needs does exist in the Star Trek universe. However, both of these episodes deal with the aftermath of genetic enhancements, not what it is like to have special needs.

So here is one of the reasons for why it is appropriate for Space Truckers to tackle the subject of special needs. It is because Star Trek hasn’t! Not all parents are going to have the funds to pay for their child to have a procedure to ‘fix’ their child’s special needs, nevermind it is illegal to have or facilitate such procedures. So there has to be a section of the population in the star trek universe that has special needs. They won’t necessarily be in starfleet because obviously an applicant needs a certain level of aptitude to pass the entrance exams.

So what is their story? How do they cope? Who is there to fight for them when others would exploit them? Can they achieve more than it would seem they can, by using kindness, nurturing and thoughtful consideration instead of low expectation and assumption? What is their story? These are the types of questions the space Truckers team wanted to explore.

‘Ah, but what about the Pakleds?’ I hear you say. Yes yes, the Pakleds. Remember that Space Truckers was first conceived in 2010, way before Lower Decks was ever a twinkle in CBS and Paramount’s eyes. The only episode to feature the Packleds, apart from being background walking characters, was the Next Generation episode “The Samaritan Snare”. In this episode an alien race, the Pakleds, were shown to be “...a little slow?” (Riker’s exact words) and it was suggested by Data that the Pakleds may have poorly developed language skills. So are the Pakleds a proxy for people with Special Needs? No, they are not, because in the episode, Worf inadvertently treats the Pakleds with a bit more respect by intimating that there may be more to the Pakleds than it may seem and he was indeed right. It was a ruse by the Pakleds to get more technology.
An interesting tidbit about Space Truckers. It was actually suggested by a few people, including a fiction podcast producer, that it would be more appropriate to make the character of Terry a Pakled instead of a person who has special needs, because of possible backlash. Gaius felt very strongly that this would be disingenuous to the character that he had envisioned and to the stories he wanted to tell.

The other reason why it is appropriate for the Space Truckers team to write about a character with special needs is because Gaius worked for about 15 years in a home supporting adults with special needs and also working in a FE college supporting teenagers who have special needs. His wife, Amiee, has also worked with people with special needs for more time than Gaius has, so the couple have at least 30 years of combined experience. The character of Terry is an amalgam of traits and different people Gaius has supported with input from Amiee.

We use a mixture of Reaper (https://www.reaper.fm/) and Audacity (https://www.audacityteam.org/).
Most of the sound effects come from various free sound effect websites but we also make our own sound effects. One sound effect we have created was putting an old digital dictaphone into an electric fan oven and turning on the fan only. This created the rumble of a starship.
At the moment, we are not looking for new episodes of Space Truckers as we are currently working on producing the series which is a lot more difficult and time consuming than writing an episode

“...and I thought writing the script was the hard bit! How wrong I was.” - Gaius Ross.

However, if you would like to send a script in for us to read, please email it to placeholder@gmail.com . We do not guarantee that we will have time to read the script, but, on the slim chance we decide to write and produce more episodes, please make sure your script has your name, date written and a contact email as well as being sent as a PDF.
Please email us at this address placeholder@gmail.com and we will do our best to get back to you.

The story is about 3 people who have never joined Starfleet.

Munro: a 30-40 year old male who has had several jobs but no real direction in his life.

Kell: a young woman in her late teens to early 20s. We know virtually nothing about her history.

Terry: A large human male, at least 7ft tall, has a big build and is very strong. He also has special educational needs. Some have advised that I should change Terry to being a Pakled, but I feel that is disingenuous to the character I have written.

That's Space Truckers in a large nut shell. It started about 16 years ago, took ages to write, accelerated because of Covid, and brought in 3 friends to help write the series. It even helped 2 of our friends to get to know each other and ended up in marriage.

So yeah, that's Space Truckers that will hopefully debut on the 8th of September 2026.

Thanks for taking the time to read about our project.
